Victorian Era Schools/ Steampunk Art

This week for inquiry, LS2 have been learning about the Victorian Era. The Victorian era was based on Queen Victoria's time. Our first activity was to choose one of the task from Victorian time and Junior, Mataio and I decided to choose to research about the Children working in factories. We researched about this because we wanted learn how life was hard for children back in the Victorian times. I found out that kids who are age 5 to 6 and are skinny would have to climb to the chimney and clean all the yuck chemicals. In my perspectives we are lucky because back in the Victorian time if the kids spoke to each other they were smacked, but in nowadays we don't get smack for doing bad things in schools. Some of the kids doing the chimney sweep had rotten teeth because of the chemicals. After this activity we were to draw a steampunk which was based on the Victorian era. A steampunk is when modern technology is mixed with technology back in the Victorian times. I have drew a heart. Our last task was to make a DLO based on what steampunk art is and facts about it as well. I really enjoyed all activity especially drawing the steampunk. 

Myths And Facts About Wolves

This week has been book week. We have had quite a few challenges based on the stories we read as young children. Our teacher Mrs Anderson has also set us a few challenges based on a few books that she read as a child. This one being Wolves. It is written by Emily Gravett, and illustrated by her too. This book explains and gives a few facts about wolves, and includes lovely images to paint a picture into your head. Our challenge, was to come up with around 5 myths about wolves, and then research them and see if they are true or false. This task could be done alone, or with a partner, so I chose to work with Alex.

Gold C.A.R.E Award: Respected New Zealand Leader

This is a presentation on Peter Jackson a New Zealand film director. I made this dlo for one of the tasks for my gold respect badge. I needed to make a DLO on a respected New Zealander. I decided to choose Peter Jackson  He most well known for The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy. Did you know that The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy won eleven Oscars

Book Week | Re-Design Cover

This week is book week for Panmure Bridge School. What we are doing for this week are a few challenges based on the books that we have read in our past, and about reading in general. For this challenge, we were to re-create the cover of a book that we read in our childhood. The book that I did was Noah Dreary, and I worked on this activity with Julian, and Jack. We had all read and loved this story, so it was an easy choice between which book we did this on. I had a lot of fun doing this activity, and I believe that Jack and Julian had just as much fun.

Book Week: Reading History

This week in Panmure Bridge School, it is book week. This is to celebrate reading. For this challenge we were to make a DLO that includes our favorite books when we were growing up. Currently I am Reading Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, by J.K Rowling. Their is also a movie to the book, but I think the book is a lot better because it gives more information.  This activity was fairly easy, although it got hard from time to time to remember which books we read as a kid. In the end, it was fun to remember what we used to like as a kid, and comparing those stories to what we like now.

Armistice Day: Illustration

This week we have been working on a activities that linked to Armistice Day. One of the activities was to re-create an image showing the end of the war. This task was to be done either individually, or with a group. I decided to go with the second option, so I worked with Alex, Jack, and Ofa. We had a lot of fun doing this activity, and hope to revisit something like it soon. This was not too challenging of an activity, but really got us challenged.

Armistice Commemoration

This upcoming Sunday will mark 100 years since World War 1 came to an end and to commemorate this occasion at school we held a special memorial which Mr Johnston led. WW1 ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. We had the whole school attend, representatives from our Board of Trustees, and a representative from the New Zealand Defense force. To open the memorial, Ofa started said the prayer which was followed by He Honore. After that Tiava and Jeremiah recited the Ode of Remembrance both in English and Maori. This was very special as it was to remember the fallen soldiers. We then listened to the last post and lowered the flag. It was then raised again to the playing of Reveille. To remember this event poppies with the signature of the students were placed on the fence in our school. Next to the poppies olive plants to remember the past, present and future were also planted. At the end of commemoration the school recited the national anthem. "We Will Remember Them, We Will Remember Them, Lest We Forget". 

Max Gimblett is a New Zealand artist who is most recognized for is quatrefoil artwork. His creative artwork has influenced our school because we now have poppies on the fence the same shape as some of his artwork.

Why Are Bridges Built?

This isn’t about tunnels, nor is it about towers, but instead bridges. We cross many of them everyday. But have you ever thought about why we have bridges? It's a question we don’t really think about, and don’t necessarily know the answer too.

First of all, why are bridges built? These wonderful structures help us connect in many ways with different people and places. Bridges are built to carry traffic from obstructed places where you can’t build a road, (for example over rivers and lakes). They provide a pathway from two separate locations, and allow you to pass by the things that obstruct your routine.

Secondly bridges are constructed out of many different materials such as: iron, stone, wood, concrete and plastic. So there are many different types of bridges at different strength levels. Bridges made out of wood is the least strongest among the rest of the materials and steel would be the strongest. So more people would use steel as opposed to wood.

Lastly, what would we do without bridges? If we had no bridges we would have not be able to go over lakes, rivers and large ponds. We would need to use helicopters, boats, airplanes and subways. For example; back in 1857 before the Panmure Bridge was built, people used a small floating platform called a punt. This was not very stable, it would usually leak and it needed a lot of repairs. The people were really frustrated and it influenced them to write a petition to build the a bridge over the Tamaki River.

Bridges, bulky brilliant structures all around us. We cross many of them everyday, when we are going to school, work or shopping. This why we need bridges, without them it would not be same, and we would not we able to go to places as easy as we can today.

This week for writing we have been looking at explanation. Since our topic for inquiry is structures we were to write our explanation about why are bridges built? In our explanation we were not aloud to use a rhetorical question as our hook because we have used it a lot in the past. So I chose to do my hook as what its not. We also needed to have a colon and a semi colon in our piece of writing. I learnt that back in 1857 before the Panmure Bridge was built, people used a small floating platform called a punt.

Tower Comparison

This term, our inquiry focus has been on structures. We have been doing many activities based around this topic, and this activity was about towers. Our task, was to compare two different towers with our well known Sky Tower. The two other towers we chose to compare with was the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab This task had to be done in pairs, although we had to choose someone from Mrs Anderson's group to work with. So for this activity, I chose to work with Miki. We had a lot of fun working together for this activity, so I do hope that next time we work together, it'll be twice as fun.

Sky Tower Visit

Today LS2, LS1 and room 5 were really lucky to go on a sponsored trip to the Sky Tower.  When we got to the Sky Tower we were split into two groups. Each group had a chance to go to the top. When we went there we were given a challenge. Our challenge was find out the unnamed landmarks around Auckland on a booklet that we were given. To help us out there were hints around the 51st floor. After that we were taken back to the bottom floor where we watched a ten minute video about the sky tower. Did you know that the Sky Tower is as heavy as 6,000 elephants. Are you aware that it took two years and nines months to build it. I want give a huge thank you Mr Bates for kindly sponsoring our trip. Without him we would have not been able to go on this fun and amazing trip. 

M&M Research

This week for maths we have been researching about M&M's with Mr Johnston. In groups we were to create a presentation with facts and informative graphs about M&M's. I found this task really fun because we got to explore new things and get creative with our learning. Everyone worked collaboratively and did an even amount of work. Jack also did some great drawings that links to our information. After finishing our presentation we had to present it to the class. I think we did really well presenting, but next time some of us need to speak up. The most interesting thing I found out was that when M&M's were first made they didn't have an M on it.

Dog Island Lighthouse

This week we have had Mr Johnston as our teacher in the absence of  Mrs Anderson and Ms Kirkpatrick. In this task we were learning about different lighthouses in New Zealand. My group was learning about the Dog Island Lighthouse. In my group there is Jack, Mele, Junior and Jay-don. I think everyone worked collaboratively and did a fair amount of work. I learnt that the Dog Island Lighthouse was built on the 5th of August 1865. Did you know that this lighthouse is located in between the South island and Stewart island?

M&M's

This week, LS2 have been using M&M's to solve basic maths problems. For this activity we needed to solve the problems in the the group we were split in. In my group there was Mele, Jack, Junior and Jay-Don.  I learnt that M&M's was made in March 3rd 1941. The hardest thing to solve this task was finding a percentage of each color. 

Food Tech

Today we had our 5th session of food tech with Mrs Tuipolotu. We were really excited to make muffins because this was our second time cooking it, and we know how delicious they are. We followed the 3 instructions that were compulsory which is follow the instructions, correctly measure the ingredients and being able to read the ingredients properly. I worked with Josh S to cook 12 chocolate chip muffins and we enjoyed cooking together. Thank you to Mrs Tuipolotu for teaching us how to cook Chocolate Chip Muffins.

HIIT

Today for our HIIT session we were doing something a bit different from what we usually do. First everyone needed to get into pairs and join up with another two pairs. In my group there was Mataio, Tiava, Zane, Lyric and Affonso. In this session we were going in a circuit doing push ups, pull ups and squats. Each person would do three sets of all the exercises. I found this session a lot better because everyone was getting puffed really fast and it also helped us with our upper body strength. Tiava and I really supported each other in during the exercises and made sure we were doing it the correct way. 

HIIT

Today for HIIT (High intensity Interval training) we were learning how to do a split squat, split squat pulse, split squat jump and jumping jacks (star jumps). I found the split squat pulse the most effective because I felt the stretch while doing it. Everyone was trying to get really puffed and get our heart rates to the red zone. I accomplished that because I was doing the exercise properly and did not get distracted. 

M.R.S.G.R.E.N

This week for inquiry the other task was to create a DLO on the 7 things that you can use to figure out if something is alive, we can remember the things by remembering a name, M.R.S G.R.E.N. The M is for movement, the R is for respiration, the S is for senses, G is for grow, R is for reproduction, E is for excretion and N is for nutrition. I completed this DLO with the help of Alex.

Geometry Coordination

Today for maths we were doing Geometry. We first got given a piece of paper with instructions. Then we were using our coordination skills to link the lines and we had to make sure we went across then up. Not up and across. Daniel and I worked together really well and were able to solve the problem. Once we finished we had to color the dog in, I chose to color mine black  I learnt that we always have to go across and then up.

Police Team Visit

Today, we were lucky enough to see the Police at our school. The Police Dogs (German Shepherd) and the Police helicopter also came. The landing of the helicopter was spectacular. They landed in the top field of the school. After that they showed us the special features the Police helicopter has. The thing that interested me the most was the camera in front of the helicopter. It can find someone who is lost really easily. After we saw the great attributes to the helicopter, the Police dogs came. The dog that we saw was awesome and his name was Kahu. Did you know that a German Shepherd can run as fast as 65 km per hour! We also got to witness  how the dog attacks a criminal. On top of that we learnt how the Police force is a great part of our community. They help us out in so many ways and sometimes we don't even notice. They are great because they keep us safe from harm. A big thanks to Constable Cyrus for getting this to all happen. Everyone had a blast. 

Teeth Animation

This week LS2 has been learning how we needed to share a community message. We were learning about what would happen if we didn't look after our teeth. Before creating DLOs we looked at disgusting photos of bad teeth, to help us find out what it would look like. After we got into partners, my partner was Ofa. Then Ofa and I have created an animation on why people should brush their teeth. The question that we used was are you brushing twice a day? Throughout making this animation we learnt some new words like decay, cavity, tartar and plaque. We learnt that decay is when your teeth becomes to rot and it starts to disappear and for example sugar makes your teeth decay. The animation that we have made is mainly for Room 1.
