Harry Potter Book Series

This week for reading our task was to create a DLO about a series of books that we have read. We needed to tick the books that we have read and keep the books that we have't read blank. The series that I chose to do was Harry Potter. I have read four out of the seven books. My favorite book from the series is the Goblet Of Fire. I quite liked this task because I was able to show some of my favorite books that I have read. 

2018 Read Theory Progress

As part of reading today LS2 have been making bar graphs to show their progress on Read Theory. Some of us did a bar graph which had our 2017 & 2018 progression and others had just our 2018 progress. In my opinion Read theory is a really helpful site to learn new words and to help comprehend questions. On my bar graph it shows my progression in February, July, and November in 2018. As you can see my bar graph looks like stairs, which shows how I have highly improved in 2018. When I first started in 2018 I was on grade 5 and now I am on grade 10. 

Myths And Facts About Wolves

This week has been book week. We have had quite a few challenges based on the stories we read as young children. Our teacher Mrs Anderson has also set us a few challenges based on a few books that she read as a child. This one being Wolves. It is written by Emily Gravett, and illustrated by her too. This book explains and gives a few facts about wolves, and includes lovely images to paint a picture into your head. Our challenge, was to come up with around 5 myths about wolves, and then research them and see if they are true or false. This task could be done alone, or with a partner, so I chose to work with Alex.

Meerkat Mail

This week is book week, to celebrate book week Mrs Anderson has read three of Emily Gravett's books and has asked us to complete three activities based on the books. The books that we have read are: Wolves, Meerkat Mail, and the Big Book of Fears. All three books were written and illustrated by Emily Gravett. The book we were read too, was Meerkat Mail. It's about a Meerkat who is getting sick of living with his family and throughout the week he went and lived with relatives who live a different lifestyle he is used to. At the end of the book he finally understands why he has to live like he does so he returned home. For this task I worked with Jack.

Do Illustrations Matter? Why?

This week is book week and to celebrate this, Mrs Anderson set up a bus stop activity which asked questions about books. Some people found doing the orientation confusing but it all went to plan at the end. After we answered the questions Mrs Anderson asked us to create a statistical analysis on one of the questions. For this activity I have created both a pie graph and bar graph to expand the knowledge of my global audience by sharing with them do illustrations in a book are popular among LS2. To answer the question the majority of people said yes and this could be for many reasons including: people not pushing themselves, or students are easily hooked in by amazing artwork. Although, I have said that illustrations are not necessary they are still an amazing thing to add.

Book Week | Re-Design Cover

This week is book week for Panmure Bridge School. What we are doing for this week are a few challenges based on the books that we have read in our past, and about reading in general. For this challenge, we were to re-create the cover of a book that we read in our childhood. The book that I did was Noah Dreary, and I worked on this activity with Julian, and Jack. We had all read and loved this story, so it was an easy choice between which book we did this on. I had a lot of fun doing this activity, and I believe that Jack and Julian had just as much fun.

This week is book week for Panmure Bridge School. What we are doing for this week are a few challenges based on the books that we have read in our past. For this challenge we needed to do an alphabet key on book tittles/Authors. I did this task with the help of Jack and Julian. I found this task really easy and I will try to do harder challenges next time.  

Book Week: Reading History

This week in Panmure Bridge School, it is book week. This is to celebrate reading. For this challenge we were to make a DLO that includes our favorite books when we were growing up. Currently I am Reading Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, by J.K Rowling. Their is also a movie to the book, but I think the book is a lot better because it gives more information.  This activity was fairly easy, although it got hard from time to time to remember which books we read as a kid. In the end, it was fun to remember what we used to like as a kid, and comparing those stories to what we like now.

Presenting Our Overall Review

Today for reading, we in our READ groups presented the DLO's we had created about our book that we had chosen for our reviews. In my READ group (The E in READ) I presented to Sanujan, Fui, Jericho and Mele. They had a lot to say about my work, although everything they had said was on a positive note. They enjoyed the comics I drew. I had a lot of fun showing my work, and having them see what I had been working on for the last 3 weeks. Why Is Sleep So Important?

Throughout the previous weeks my reading group worked collaboratively together to create a DLO about why sleep is so important? Today my group presented our sleep DLO to everyone. The type of reading we used to create our DLO was reciprocal reading. We also used a strategy called inferring. Inferring means reading between lines and combining clues from a particular text and using our prior knowledge to get an idea. We found that elders need the same amount of sleep as adults interesting because we thought they would need more sleep because they are older. We all used our great researching skills to find interesting information and facts about sleep. I found this task really interesting and fun and I would like to do more tasks like this in the future.

Comrades Marathon

This week for reading our task was to research about the Comrades Marathon. But first we were told to get into a mixed group of boys and girls. Since their were no more girls left our group had 3 boys and 1 girl. My partners were Alex, Viva and Jericho. I found this task fun and interesting because I did not know anything about the Comrades Marathon. But after researching I learnt lots of fascinating things. Did you that an ultra marathon is double the length of a normal marathon.

Homonyms

Today LS2 was learning about Homonyms. Homonyms are 2 words that are spelt the same and be pronounced the same, but they have totally different meanings. I finished this dlo with the help of Mataio. I think Mataio and I came up with interesting homonym examples. I enjoyed doing this task because I learnt what a homonym is.

Evaluation

Today for reading rakino groups task was to make an evaluation about the text read. The story was called Harry's war. In our dlo we were to write a summary, facts and questions that we had after reading the text. I think our groups worked really well and everyone contributed in the work. I learnt that Harry never fought in the war. 

Maori Contingent War Heroes/Opinons

As part as learning about The Maori Battalion, we were to create a group DLO writing our own opinions on why we should remember the Maori contingent's soldiers. The majority of the group chose to remember the soldiers. Jeremiah had disagreed and said we should not remember them because they had a small impact during World War 1. After writing our opinions we researched a Maori contingent war hero. Everyone had to explain their heroes backstory and a heroic deed that they did.

The Maori Battalion

This week for reading my group have been learning about The Maori Battalion. We first read a text to find out what it's about. Once we did that my group and I worked collaboratively to write a summary about The Maori Battalion. In my opinion, I think that the summary we wrote was up to the standard it needed to be. After that we got into pairs and gave each other constructive feedback and feed forward. I think Ofa did really well on answering the questions that he was asked. 

Te Wiki - The Week

For reading this week we read the next article leading to the treaty of Waitangi. The text we read was about the one week before the treaty of Waitangi was signed. It was an interesting book. While reading we had to note all the words we are unsure of or interested in. After reading the text we were to make a DLO summarizing the whole article. I worked with Ofa and Mataio. When we are summarizing a text we use a special method which is to write the 20 most important words, then the 6 most important words and write a short summary. This all links back to the words we were to write down while reading the text. 

The Pathway - Summary

This week for reading our group has been focusing on how the Treaty Of Waitangi came to be. The treaty of Waiting was an agreement between the Maori and the English. During the 1700's - 1800's the British were the superpower of the world. They have colonised many countries that are now independent. The British bought land in New Zealand for things as little as a pound. Even though a pound was useless in New Zealand because they did not use cash. British settlement had a huge impact on New Zealand because that helped to develop the New Zealand that we know of today. Some British people back then weren't respecting the culture and laws the Maori's had put in place. The book we read was basically a timeline that lead up to the signing of the treaty of Waitangi.

Read Theory

Today for Read Theory I read a text on how teddy bears were created. The quiz level was on grade 8 so it was a bit hard. I got only 4 questions right out of 6. The reason we do read theory is because that it helps us with our reading, grows our knowledge, how to comprehend, and improves our vocabulary.

Two Day Wonder Poem

Today for reading our group Ruru were doing poems. We had to read a poem called Two Day Wonder and then answer some questions about it. Today I learnt a new word called juxtaposition. The thing I found hard about this task was listing the words because it was a bit tricky finding them.

There is a clever contrast between the way the poet describes yesterday and today.  List all the words that give you a feeling of being sick, sad, depressed or bored. - Grumbled, Sulked, Dragged, Silent, Yawned and drooped

Now list all the words that describe feeling well, happy, bright and active from the second verse. - Gallops, Shines, Dances, Swish, better, Hurry, flying and clatter

The lines from each verse matchup 1 also.  List five of the opposite images.  This first one is done for you.

The street stretched silent - Cars swish, skateboards clatter.

Clouds dragged, low and slow - Clouds hurry, high and flying.

The World yawned and grumbled - The World shines and dances.

My bike lay on the drive - My bike waits by the garage.

The Dog sulked in his basket - The Dog gallops around the house.

Washing dropped on the line - Shirts, sheets, socks stream in the breeze.

This is called juxtaposition.  The fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect.

On The Bus Comic Strip

Today for our reading task ruru had to read a story called On The Bus. It was about a boy trying to get on a bus with his pig but he is not allowed so he tries to sneak the pig in his bag. It all works out and he gets to his Grandad's house. Then we had to make a comic strip on what would happen if the pig got out of the bag. I enjoyed doing this task because I got to be creative while making my comic strip. The thing I found hard about this task was getting the images because I could not find images that could fit with the comic strip.
