Winter Learning Journey: Day 4 - Bonus Activity

Bonus Activity: Hector’s dolphins are a very special native animal found only in New Zealand. They are the smallest dolphin in the world measuring 1.5 metres long and they are quite rare. Sadly, many Hector’s dolphins are killed every year when they get caught in large fishing nets and can’t escape. Some people have argued that fishermen shouldn’t be allowed to fish in Farewell Spit in order to protect the dolphins living there. What do you think? On your blog, tell us whether you think that fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned (stopped).
I think that the fishermen should get banned from the farewell spit because if this keeps on going on the Hector Dolphins might get extinct. Also there are many other places that the fishermen could go to catch there fish.

  1. Hi Fraidoon
I agree with you. People should fish in a place where there are no Hectors dolphins because the dolphins are only found in New Zealand waters and they are very rare because they are getting killed by people. Keep up the great work.

  2. Hey Fraidoon
I agree with you that fishermen should get banned from the farewell spit because Hector's Dolphin might get extinct which is not good. I think the fishermen's should go fish somewhere else because there's lot of places than the Farewell Spit. Keep up the extraordinary work!

  3. Hi Fraidoon. I totally agree with you. People should be banned fishing at Farewell Spit. Since you can only find Hector dolphins in New Zealand, there is a high chance of them becoming extinct. Keep up the great work.

  4. Hey Fraidoon!

Yes, it would be really sad to see the Hector Dophins become extinct. They are such a special animal and apparently the smallest dolphin in the world! We need to protect them and be proud of them!
